August 18th - 20th, 1978 - Statesville, NC - venue for the Carolina Open - State Ty

This tournament was as scheduled later in the year on August 18^th - 20^th instead of July 4^th weekend, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the .  It was a hot August weekend and the playing room at the Community Center had no air condition.  Elbert walks out in protest, refusing to play under these conditions and left for Sanford.  This opened the field, allowing Angus Simpson to win his second state title.  Lester Balderson of Richmond, Virginia was recognized as the open tournament winner.
